Background
Malik is currently convening the Ethnicity and Mental Health Improvement Project (EMHIP), a cross-sector, system-wide partnership to reduce ethnic disparities in access, experience and outcomes in mental health services, in collaboration with NHS South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust. This project emerged out of the core work of the Wandsworth Community Empowerment Network, which is to address the structural inequalities and systemic racism that leads to discrimination, poverty and hardship, by unlocking the capabilities of frontline community groups and their members to be the agents of change within their own neighbourhoods and constituencies. And with this the loci of power and resources shifting from public institutions into community networks to enable them to be at the forefront of early help, intervention and prevention.
This ground-level work, in solidarity with community leaders and networks, also helping to inform Malik's Post Graduate studies at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, Imperial College London, where he is exploring the role of Social Network Analysis in the generation of relationships and connectivity to improve the operationalisation of rights-based, co-produced healthcare.
